Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, often known as Il Grechetto, was a Genoese painter and printmaker whose work is defined by a fluid, energetic approach to draughtsmanship. This study of the Nativity demonstrates his mastery of the oil sketch, a medium he utilised to explore light and form with remarkable speed and spontaneity. The composition centres on the Virgin Mary, who is depicted with the infant Christ, while a group of putti descends from above to witness the event. Castiglione was heavily influenced by the works of Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck, both of whom spent time in Genoa.
