A masterful late fifteenth-century engraving by Martin Schongauer, depicting the Virgin Mary in adoration before the infant Jesus.
Martin Schongauer was a master of the burin, and this engraving of The Nativity demonstrates his technical precision. As a central figure in the development of German printmaking, Schongauer influenced generations of artists, including Albrecht Dürer. This work belongs to a series depicting the life of Christ, showcasing the artist's ability to render texture and form through controlled line work.
The composition centres on the Virgin Mary, who kneels in adoration before the infant Jesus. Her robes are rendered with deep, cascading folds that suggest weight and volume. Beside her, the ox and the donkey are depicted with a naturalistic observation that was characteristic of Schongauer's approach. The setting is a dilapidated structure, with a thatched roof and crumbling masonry, which provides a stark contrast to the divine nature of the scene. In the background, a small, distant landscape features figures approaching the site, adding a sense of narrative depth to the print.
Schongauer uses a variety of hatching techniques to create shadows and highlights, giving the figures a three-dimensional quality. The cross-hatching on the stone walls and the delicate lines defining the straw and the animals' fur reveal the artist's command over the copper plate. The monogram M+S is visible at the bottom centre, a mark that became synonymous with quality in the late fifteenth century. This print is an example of the high level of detail achievable in early engraving, where every stroke serves to define the form and mood of the sacred subject matter. The balance between the quiet devotion of the central figures and the rustic environment creates a contemplative atmosphere.
