A sixteenth-century woodcut by Veit Rudolf Specklin depicting the biblical punishment of King Adonibezek.
This woodcut by Veit Rudolf Specklin depicts the biblical narrative of Adonibezek, a Canaanite king who suffered the same fate he had previously inflicted upon others. The scene captures the moment of retribution as his thumbs and toes are removed. Specklin, an artist active in Strasbourg, utilised the woodcut medium to convey this dramatic historical account with direct, graphic clarity. The composition is organised to focus on the central act of violence, framed by soldiers who observe the punishment.
The line work is characteristic of mid-sixteenth-century German printmaking, employing clear contours and minimal shading to define the figures and the surrounding terrain. The background features stylised clouds and distant hills, providing a sense of place without distracting from the primary action. The figures are rendered with a focus on narrative legibility, a common trait in the book illustrations of the period.
Specklin was known for his work as a draughtsman and woodcutter, often contributing to scientific and historical publications. This print reflects the period's interest in moralising biblical stories, which were frequently reproduced for a wider audience through the medium of the woodcut. The starkness of the black-and-white lines emphasises the brutality of the event, aligning with the didactic nature of the source material. The print demonstrates the technical proficiency of the era, where the woodcutter had to carefully carve away the negative space to leave the image in relief. This piece offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the Reformation era, where such imagery served both as historical record and moral instruction.
