A detailed woodcut by Wolf Traut depicting a sixteenth-century battlefield scene, featuring infantry, cavalry, and artillery during the wars in Gueldres.
This woodcut by Wolf Traut depicts a scene from the military campaigns in Gueldres. Traut, a contemporary of Albrecht Dürer in Nuremberg, was a skilled draughtsman and printmaker whose work often focused on historical and religious narratives. The composition is divided into distinct zones: the upper section contains a text block in German, while the lower portion presents a dense, multi-layered battlefield scene.
The visual narrative captures the chaos of early sixteenth-century warfare. In the foreground, infantrymen engage in close-quarters combat with pikes and swords. The mid-ground features cavalry units in motion, while the background reveals a siege encampment complete with artillery pieces, tents, and a fortified town. Traut employs a high vantage point to organise these disparate elements, allowing the viewer to observe the tactical arrangement of the troops and the logistical infrastructure of the siege.
The line work is characteristic of the period, utilising clear, decisive strokes to define the armour, weaponry, and architectural features of the town. The artist balances the crowded melee of the foreground with the more structured placement of the artillery and fortifications. This print provides a technical look at the transition in military technology, showing the integration of heavy cannons alongside traditional cavalry and infantry formations. The inclusion of the text block suggests this work was intended for a broadsheet or a historical chronicle, serving to document the events for a contemporary audience. The print reflects the aesthetic values of the German Renaissance, where clarity of form and narrative detail were prioritised to convey the gravity of historical events.
