A fine etching from 1858 by James McNeill Whistler, depicting a well-known Parisian street figure with precise, economical line work.
James McNeill Whistler produced this etching in 1858 during his early period in Paris. It belongs to the set of works known as the Douze eaux-fortes d'après nature, or the French Set. The subject is Mother Gerard, a woman who sold flowers and sang songs in the Latin Quarter. She was a familiar figure to the artistic community in Paris at the time.
Whistler employs a direct approach to the medium. The lines are etched with precision, capturing the texture of the subject's clothing and the weathered quality of her features. The composition focuses on the figure, who stands against a largely empty background. This choice directs the viewer's attention to the character of the sitter rather than a specific setting. The heavy cross-hatching on the right side of the figure creates a sense of volume and shadow, contrasting with the lighter, more sparse lines used to define the left side and the ground.
This work demonstrates Whistler's early mastery of the etching needle. He avoids unnecessary detail, preferring to suggest form through economy of line. The print includes the address of the printer, Auguste Delâtre, at the bottom, which was a common practice for Whistler's early editions. The work reflects the influence of the Realist movement, which favoured the depiction of everyday people and contemporary life. By choosing a street character as his subject, Whistler aligns himself with artists who sought to document the social fabric of the city. The print remains a clear example of his technical skill and his interest in the expressive potential of black and white media.
