Noël Nicolas Coypel, a member of the prominent French artistic dynasty, produced this work during the early eighteenth century. The composition depicts Saint James the Greater in a moment of divine intervention, surrounded by figures who react with varying degrees of awe and supplication. The central figure of the saint, draped in a heavy red mantle over a blue tunic, commands the space with an outstretched arm, while a kneeling man in the foreground offers a gesture of reverence toward an open book.

The painting reflects the transition from the structured classicism of the previous century toward the lighter, more fluid sensibilities of the Rococo period. Coypel employs a palette of muted earth tones, punctuated by the saturated red of the saint's garment. The architectural setting, featuring classical columns and a distant turret, provides a sense of depth and historical grounding. The figures are arranged in a theatrical manner, typical of the period's interest in narrative clarity and emotional expression. Light enters from the upper left, illuminating the faces of the onlookers and the recumbent figure on the right, creating a sense of drama without resorting to the extreme chiaroscuro of the Baroque era.

Coypel was admitted to the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in 1720, and this work aligns with the stylistic expectations of the time. The brushwork is controlled, focusing on the textures of the drapery and the subtle variations in skin tone. The scene captures a specific theological narrative, yet it functions primarily as an exercise in composition and human interaction. The spatial arrangement guides the viewer's eye from the kneeling figure in the foreground to the standing saint, and finally to the secondary group of observers in the background, ensuring a balanced distribution of visual weight across the canvas.
