A refined Georgian portrait by George Romney, depicting Mary Bold in a classical pose with elegant silk drapery.
George Romney, a contemporary of Joshua Reynolds and Thomas Gainsborough, established himself as one of the most sought-after portraitists in eighteenth-century London. This work depicts Mary Bold, who married Thomas Hunt III in 1764. Romney captures his subject in a three-quarter length pose, leaning against a stone plinth. The composition reflects the artist's preference for classical simplicity, a hallmark of his style during this period.
The sitter wears a gown of pale yellow silk, draped with a blue sash and a contrasting white wrap. Romney employs a restrained colour palette, allowing the luminosity of the fabric to draw the viewer's attention. The background features a suggestion of a parkland setting, typical of the grand manner portraiture popular among the British aristocracy and landed gentry. The soft, diffused light across the subject's face and the gentle handling of the drapery demonstrate Romney's technical proficiency in oil paint.
Romney often favoured a more direct approach to portraiture than his rivals, focusing on the character of the sitter rather than elaborate decorative backgrounds. In this piece, the focus remains firmly on Mary Bold. Her steady gaze and composed posture convey a sense of quiet dignity. The painting provides a clear example of the aesthetic values prevalent in British portraiture during the late Georgian era, where the influence of classical sculpture and Italian Renaissance painting informed the poses and arrangements of the sitters. This print reproduces the textures of the original oil paint, from the smooth finish of the silk to the weathered appearance of the stone support, offering an accurate representation of Romney's brushwork and tonal control.
