The work depicts Minamoto no Toru, a ninth-century courtier and poet, standing near the shore of the Kawara-no-in, his residence in Kyoto. Hokusai captures the figure in a moment of quiet contemplation, accompanied by two attendants. The composition balances the human subjects with the natural environment, featuring a crescent moon hanging in the evening sky above a distant mountain range.

The print demonstrates Hokusai's mastery of the chuban format. The colour palette is restrained, utilising soft greens, muted blues, and earthy tones to evoke the atmosphere of a twilight scene.
