A delicate woodblock print from the two-volume series Ehon haru no nishiki, showcasing the refined aesthetic and soft colour palette of Suzuki Harunobu.
Suzuki Harunobu is credited with the development of nishiki-e, or brocade prints, which introduced full-colour printing to the Ukiyo-e tradition. This specific work originates from the two-volume publication titled Ehon haru no nishiki, or Picture Book, The Brocade of Spring. The pages display the characteristic aesthetic of Harunobu, featuring slender, ethereal figures set within domestic or natural environments. The composition relies on a delicate balance of negative space and soft, muted colour washes.
In this scene, a woman stands on a veranda, her posture reflecting the graceful, elongated proportions typical of Harunobu's subjects. The surrounding environment is rendered with minimal detail, focusing on the interplay between the interior space and the exterior view. The inclusion of calligraphic text at the top of the pages integrates the literary and visual arts, a common practice in Edo-period book production. The printing technique employs subtle gradations of colour, which were achieved through the precise registration of multiple woodblocks.
Harunobu's work often captures quiet, contemplative moments. His figures are frequently depicted in states of repose or gentle activity, avoiding the dramatic action found in other Ukiyo-e schools. The paper texture and the soft application of pigment reflect the high quality of craftsmanship associated with his publishers. This print provides a view into the refined tastes of the urban population in eighteenth-century Japan, where such illustrated books were highly sought after for their poetic and visual appeal. The work remains a primary example of the technical shift toward polychrome printing, which transformed the medium of the woodblock print during the mid-Edo period.
