A dramatic Baroque scene depicting the miraculous escape of Saint Peter, guided by an angel through the shadows of a prison cell.
This work depicts the biblical account of Saint Peter being freed from his prison cell by an angel. Bartolomé Esteban Murillo employs a dramatic use of light, a hallmark of the Spanish Baroque period, to guide the viewer through the narrative. The angel acts as the primary source of illumination, casting a soft, ethereal glow that contrasts with the surrounding darkness of the dungeon. This technique creates a sense of divine intervention, separating the miraculous event from the mundane reality of the sleeping guards in the background.
Murillo focuses on the interaction between the two figures. Saint Peter, shown in a state of bewildered awakening, reaches out towards his saviour. The angel, rendered with grace and fluidity, gestures towards the exit, guiding the apostle to safety. The composition is balanced, with the figures arranged to draw the eye from the heavy, iron-bound chains on the floor up to the radiant form of the angel. The artist uses a palette of muted earth tones for the prison environment, which allows the warm, luminous colours of the angel's robes to command attention.
As a master of the Seville school, Murillo was known for his ability to combine naturalism with religious sentiment. In this piece, he avoids excessive theatricality, opting instead for a quiet, focused intensity. The textures of the fabric, the heavy metal of the shackles, and the soft skin of the figures are rendered with precision. This print captures the atmospheric quality of the original oil painting, preserving the subtle gradations of shadow and light that define the scene. It is a work that rewards close observation, revealing the technical skill of one of the most respected painters of the seventeenth century.
