A classic plate from Henri Matisse's 1947 Jazz series, featuring bold, organic paper cut-out shapes in a balanced, rhythmic composition.
The Knife Thrower is a plate from the 1947 book Jazz, a collection of images created by Henri Matisse during his later years. Confined to his bed or chair due to illness, Matisse developed the technique of cutting shapes directly from sheets of paper painted with gouache. This method allowed him to draw with scissors, bypassing the traditional separation between line and colour. The composition features two primary figures rendered in simplified, organic silhouettes. On the left, a jagged, magenta form suggests the motion of a performer, while a pale violet figure stands centrally with arms raised. These figures are surrounded by scattered, leaf-like shapes in black and blue, which create a sense of rhythm across the white background. The work avoids realistic detail, focusing instead on the balance of positive and negative space. Matisse described this process as carving into colour. The resulting images possess a directness that reflects his interest in circus themes and the spontaneity of performance. The Jazz series remains a significant example of his late-career experimentation, where he distilled his visual language to its most essential components. The flat application of colour and the deliberate arrangement of shapes demonstrate his mastery of composition, even within the constraints of his physical health. This print captures the energy of the original paper cut-out, preserving the clean edges and the specific tonal qualities of the gouache pigments used by the artist.
