A biting 1832 political lithograph by Denis-Auguste-Marie Raffet, satirising the French political establishment through grotesque caricature.
This lithograph by Denis-Auguste-Marie Raffet, titled 'Les Incurables: Eux seuls ont compris la Révolution', appeared in the French satirical journal 'La Caricature' in 1832. Raffet, a draughtsman and printmaker, was known for his sharp observations of military life and social conditions in post-Napoleonic France. This work functions as a biting political commentary on the political class of the era.
The composition depicts a group of physically disabled or deformed individuals, presented with grotesque exaggeration. By labelling them 'The Incurables' who alone understood the Revolution, Raffet employs irony to suggest that the political establishment of the July Monarchy was as detached from reality as the figures shown. The figures are rendered with a focus on caricature, using distorted proportions and expressive facial features to convey a sense of moral and political decay. The lithographic technique allows for subtle tonal variations, which Raffet uses to define the figures against a sparse, nondescript background.
As a piece of nineteenth-century social satire, the work reflects the climate of censorship and political unrest that defined the period. Raffet captures the cynicism of the public towards the ruling elite, using the visual language of the grotesque to strip away the veneer of authority. The print is a document of the era's visual culture, where the press used illustration to critique power structures. The artist's ability to combine technical skill with social critique makes this an example of the power of the printed image in shaping public discourse during the 1830s.
