A detailed lithographic study of wildflowers and wooden fenceposts by Swiss artist Alexandre Calame, originally produced as an instructional drawing plate.
This lithograph by the Swiss artist Alexandre Calame originates from his series titled Etudes progressives. Calame, known primarily for his dramatic depictions of Alpine scenery, here turns his attention to the smaller, immediate details of the natural world. The print presents two distinct studies of flora positioned alongside weathered wooden fenceposts.
In the upper study, Calame captures a cluster of wildflowers growing near a decaying log. The lower study focuses on broad-leafed plants and grasses, set against a simple wooden barrier. The artist employs a precise, controlled line to define the textures of the leaves, the rough grain of the wood, and the uneven ground. By isolating these elements from the grander mountain vistas he typically painted, Calame demonstrates his ability to observe the quiet, overlooked corners of the countryside.
As a pedagogical tool, the Etudes progressives were intended to guide students in the techniques of drawing from nature. The composition remains balanced, with the artist using light and shadow to create a sense of volume within the foliage. The inclusion of the artist's initials, A.C., in the lower left corner confirms his authorship of these instructional plates. This work offers a view into the technical rigour of nineteenth-century art education, where the study of individual natural forms was considered a necessary foundation for more complex compositions. The print retains the original plate markings, including the series title at the top and the publisher details at the base, providing a clear record of its historical context as a published instructional aid.
