A striking Symbolist work by Georges Lacombe, capturing the dramatic Brittany coastline through rhythmic lines and a bold, decorative composition.
Georges Lacombe, a member of the Nabis group, produced this work during his time in Brittany. The painting captures the rugged coastline of Vorhor, where the artist spent his summers. Lacombe employs a distinct visual language, moving away from naturalistic representation towards a more symbolic interpretation of the natural world. The composition is framed by dark, imposing rock formations that act as a portal to the sea beyond.
This framing device creates a sense of enclosure, forcing the viewer to look through the narrow gap at the churning water. The sea itself is rendered with rhythmic, linear brushwork that suggests movement and energy. The colour palette is deliberate, contrasting the deep, near-black tones of the cliffs with the golden hues of the water and the pale, ethereal blues of the sea foam.
Lacombe was influenced by Japanese woodblock prints, which is evident in the flattened perspective and the emphasis on decorative line. The work avoids the traditional depth of academic painting, opting instead for a graphic quality that prioritises the arrangement of shapes and colours. The sky, painted in muted tones, provides a quiet backdrop to the drama occurring below. This piece reflects the Nabis interest in subjective experience, where the artist seeks to express an internal state through the external environment. By simplifying forms and using non-naturalistic colours, Lacombe transforms a specific geographical location into a scene of quiet contemplation. The work remains a clear example of the transition towards modernism, where the artist's personal vision takes precedence over the literal transcription of reality.
