A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert depicting the biblical scene of the Good Samaritan settling his account with an innkeeper.
This engraving by Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert depicts the biblical narrative of the Good Samaritan. The scene focuses on the moment the Samaritan settles the bill with the innkeeper, ensuring the continued care of the injured traveller. Coornhert, a significant figure in the Dutch Renaissance, employs a precise linear technique characteristic of sixteenth-century printmaking. The composition balances the primary interaction in the foreground with secondary figures in the background, where the wounded man is assisted into the inn.
The artist uses cross-hatching and varied line weights to define the forms of the figures and the textures of their clothing. The Samaritan is shown with a rugged, bearded appearance, contrasting with the more refined posture of the innkeeper. A horse stands to the left, adding a sense of travel and movement to the scene. In the lower right, a barrel serves as a grounding element, directing the viewer's eye toward the transaction taking place. The architectural details of the inn provide a sense of place, while the figures in the background maintain the continuity of the narrative sequence.
Coornhert was not only an engraver but also a writer, philosopher, and theologian. His work often reflects his interest in moral and ethical themes. This print demonstrates his ability to translate complex human interactions into a clear, visual medium. The attention to detail in the drapery and the expressive faces of the subjects reflects the influence of Italian Mannerism, which was circulating through Northern Europe at the time. This piece offers a glimpse into the technical skill and thematic concerns of Dutch printmakers during the mid-to-late sixteenth century, providing a clear example of how biblical stories were interpreted and disseminated through the medium of engraving.
