A refined woodblock print by Yashima Gakutei depicting a courtesan and her attendant near the entrance to the Yoshiwara district.
This woodblock print by Yashima Gakutei depicts a scene from the Yoshiwara, the licensed pleasure district of Edo-period Japan. The composition is divided into two distinct visual zones. The upper section provides a view of the district entrance, showing the architecture of the gate and the activity of visitors. The lower section features a circular inset containing a portrait of a high-ranking courtesan accompanied by her young attendant, or kamuro.
Gakutei was a student of Totoya Hokkei and Katsushika Hokusai, and he became known for his mastery of surimono. These prints were privately commissioned, often for poetry circles, and were produced with high-quality materials including metallic pigments and embossing. The attention to detail in the textiles worn by the figures reflects the fashion of the era, while the inclusion of Japanese calligraphy adds a literary dimension to the visual narrative. The print captures the atmosphere of the Yoshiwara, a space that functioned as a centre for fashion, theatre, and social interaction. The use of a circular frame for the primary subjects draws the eye to the elaborate hairstyles and patterned garments of the women, contrasting with the linear, architectural perspective of the gate shown above. This work demonstrates the technical precision typical of Gakutei's output, particularly in the rendering of fine lines and the balanced application of colour. The print serves as a record of the aesthetic values and social customs prevalent in nineteenth-century Japan.
