A refined Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Kubo Shunman, depicting a courtesan and her attendants during an evening outing.
Kubo Shunman, a polymath of the Edo period, produced this woodblock print during the height of the Ukiyo-e movement. The composition depicts a high-ranking courtesan accompanied by her entourage, including a young kamuro, as they navigate the evening streets. Shunman was known for his refined aesthetic, often favouring subtle colour palettes and elegant line work over the more aggressive styles of his contemporaries.
The print displays the characteristic features of the nishiki-e, or brocade print, technique. The figures are arranged with a focus on their elaborate garments, which feature delicate patterns and soft hues. The courtesan stands as the central figure, her posture and attire indicating her status within the Yoshiwara pleasure district. Beside her, an attendant manages a portable lantern, which provides the only indication of the nocturnal setting. The absence of a detailed background allows the viewer to focus entirely on the interaction and the fashion of the subjects.
Shunman was not only a printmaker but also a poet and painter, and this background informs the lyrical quality of his work. His approach to figure drawing is restrained, avoiding exaggerated features in favour of a more naturalistic, albeit stylised, representation. The print captures a moment of quiet movement, reflecting the social rituals of the period. The paper retains a soft, aged quality, typical of surviving impressions from the late eighteenth century. This work provides a window into the cultural life of Edo, documenting the fashion and social hierarchies of the time through the lens of a master printmaker who balanced technical precision with a gentle, observational style.
