The Garden of Love (Large Plate) is a significant engraving by the anonymous German printmaker known as Master ES. Active in the Upper Rhine region during the mid-fifteenth century, this artist is recognised for developing the technical capacity of the burin, allowing for greater detail and tonal variation in early copperplate engravings. This work depicts a courtly scene, a popular subject in late medieval secular art, where figures gather in a walled enclosure to engage in music, conversation, and courtship.

The composition is divided into two distinct zones. In the foreground, a group of elegantly dressed figures occupies a garden, surrounded by symbolic flora and a small fountain. The figures are rendered with the characteristic linear style of the period, where drapery folds are defined by dense, parallel hatching. To the left, a figure stands under a simple structure, while the main group sits around a table. In the background, the artist provides a view of a distant castle and a hunting party, creating a sense of spatial depth that was ambitious for the era. The inclusion of a jester-like figure in the foreground adds a layer of narrative complexity, often associated with the moralising tone of contemporary courtly literature.

Master ES was one of the first printmakers to sign his works with initials, which helped establish his identity as an individual creator rather than a mere craftsman.
