An early German engraving by Master ES, depicting Saint Bartholomew with precise linear detail and traditional Gothic script.
This engraving by the anonymous German printmaker known as Master ES depicts Saint Bartholomew in a characteristic pose. The figure stands in profile, his gaze directed upward, holding an open book. The artist employs a rigorous system of hatching and cross-hatching to define the voluminous folds of the saint's drapery, creating a sense of weight and physical presence. The lines are precise, demonstrating the technical control required for early metalplate engraving.
Behind the figure, a scrolling banderole contains Gothic script, a common feature in devotional prints of the fifteenth century. The halo, rendered with simple circular lines, provides a clear identifier for the saint. The composition is contained within a rectangular frame, typical of the period's approach to individual devotional images. Master ES was a significant figure in the development of German printmaking, known for his ability to translate the stylistic qualities of contemporary painting into the medium of engraving.
The work reflects the aesthetic priorities of the mid-fifteenth century in the Upper Rhine region. The focus remains on the clarity of the figure and the legibility of the religious iconography. The artist avoids unnecessary background detail, ensuring the viewer's attention remains on the saint. The print demonstrates the transition toward more sophisticated tonal modelling in engraving, moving away from the simpler outlines found in earlier woodcuts. This piece offers a clear view into the technical standards of the period, showing how early printmakers managed the limitations of the copper plate to achieve depth and texture. The resulting image is a study in balance, where the linear energy of the drapery contrasts with the stillness of the saint's posture.
