This work depicts the legend of the monk Raigō, a historical figure from the Heian period. According to folklore, Raigō sought imperial support for his temple, Mii-dera. When his request was denied, he engaged in a hunger strike until his death. The legend claims his resentment manifested as a swarm of rats, which destroyed the sacred scriptures of the rival Enryaku-ji temple. Kobayashi Kiyochika captures the moment of supernatural manifestation, where the monk's spirit, transformed by anger, summons a dark, swirling vortex of smoke and spectral energy. Kiyochika, known for his transition from traditional woodblock prints to works influenced by Western light and shadow techniques, employs a dramatic composition here. The figure of the monk is rendered with dynamic movement, his robes caught in the turbulence of the apparition. The contrast between the grounded, architectural elements of the temple platform and the ethereal, chaotic form of the spirit creates a sense of unease. The palette remains largely muted, relying on ink washes to convey the smoke, punctuated by the fiery tones surrounding the deity-like figure emerging from the darkness.
