A seminal woodcut from Albrecht Dürer's 1498 Apocalypse series, depicting the four biblical riders with exceptional technical detail and dramatic movement.
This woodcut is the fourth plate from Albrecht Dürer's series, The Apocalypse, published in 1498. It depicts the biblical narrative from the Book of Revelation, where four riders represent Conquest, War, Famine, and Death. Dürer utilised the woodcut medium to achieve a level of detail previously unseen in the craft, employing dense hatching and cross-hatching to create volume and texture within the figures and the turbulent sky. The composition is dynamic, with the four horses charging from left to right across the frame. The riders are positioned in a tight, overlapping formation, creating a sense of unstoppable momentum. Below them, figures representing various social classes are trampled, illustrating the indiscriminate nature of the destruction. An angel hovers in the upper portion of the scene, observing the chaos below. Dürer's mastery of line allows for a clear distinction between the muscular forms of the horses, the flowing garments of the riders, and the skeletal, emaciated appearance of Death, who rides the final horse. This work demonstrates the technical capabilities of the German printmaking tradition at the end of the fifteenth century. By moving away from the simpler, bolder lines of earlier woodcuts, Dürer introduced a painterly quality to the medium. The print remains a primary example of his ability to translate complex theological themes into accessible visual narratives. The inclusion of his monogram, the AD, at the base of the print confirms his authorship and his pride in the quality of the production. The work reflects the anxieties of the period, as many Europeans anticipated the end of the world at the turn of the century.
