Denys Calvaert, a Flemish painter who spent the majority of his career in Bologna, produced this depiction of the Flagellation of Christ during the late sixteenth century. The composition reflects the Mannerist style prevalent in Italy at the time, characterised by elongated figures, dramatic lighting, and a focus on anatomical tension. Calvaert was a significant figure in the Bolognese school, operating a successful academy that influenced many local artists, including Guido Reni and Domenichino.

The scene centres on the figure of Christ, bound to a central column. He is flanked by two tormentors, whose muscular forms and dynamic poses create a sense of immediate physical action. The artist employs a chiaroscuro effect, using deep shadows to define the architectural space and to draw the viewer's attention to the central figures.
