A late sixteenth-century Venetian oil painting depicting the body of Christ supported by two angels, rendered with characteristic attention to light and texture.
Leandro Bassano, a member of the prolific Bassano family of painters from the Veneto region, produced this work during the late sixteenth century. The composition depicts the body of Christ supported by two angels, a subject that allowed the artist to explore the interplay between human anatomy and divine narrative. The figures are arranged in a manner typical of the period, with the pale, limp form of Christ contrasting against the more active, emotive gestures of the attending angels.
The painting demonstrates the characteristic Venetian interest in light and texture. The drapery, rendered with fluid brushwork, provides a sense of weight and movement, while the background landscape, though secondary, offers a glimpse into the atmospheric qualities favoured by the Bassano workshop. The palette is dominated by earthy tones, punctuated by the soft, luminous flesh tones of the figures and the subtle colouration of the angels' garments.
Leandro, who often collaborated with his father Jacopo and his brother Francesco, developed a style that balanced the workshop's established traditions with his own observations. This piece reflects the technical proficiency of the Bassano studio, particularly in the handling of oil paint to create soft transitions and a sense of volume. The focus remains on the physical reality of the scene, presenting a moment of quiet contemplation rather than overt drama. The inclusion of the crown of thorns in the foreground serves as a direct reference to the preceding events of the Passion, grounding the spiritual subject in a tangible, material context. This work remains a representative example of the religious art produced in Northern Italy during the late Renaissance, capturing the technical skill and thematic concerns of the era.
