Description
Painted in 1957, 'The Fisherman' by Victor Brauner is a Surrealist composition featuring a figure holding a fish, rendered in a semi-abstract style with geometric shapes and earthy tones.
Victor Brauner (1903-1966) was a Romanian-French painter and sculptor, best known for his association with Surrealism. Brauner's artistic journey began in Bucharest, where he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts. His early work was influenced by Expressionism, but he soon gravitated towards the avant-garde movements of the time. In the 1930s, he moved to Paris and joined the Surrealist group led by André Breton. Brauner's art often explored themes of mythology, the occult, and personal symbolism. He developed a distinctive style characterised by distorted figures, vibrant colours, and dreamlike imagery. 'The Fisherman', created in 1957, exemplifies Brauner's mature Surrealist style. The composition features a figure holding a fish, rendered in a semi-abstract manner. The figure's face is simplified, with a single prominent eye, while the body is constructed from geometric shapes and patterns. The colour palette is dominated by earthy tones of yellow, orange, and brown, contrasted with areas of blue and green. The background is divided into a grid-like structure, adding to the overall sense of fragmentation and unease. The fisherman's hand is prominently displayed, holding a fish with detailed line work. The painting reflects Brauner's interest in exploring the subconscious and creating enigmatic, symbolic imagery.
