A masterful 15th-century engraving by Martin Schongauer depicting the Entombment of Christ with precise line work and emotional depth.
This engraving by Martin Schongauer, a master of the Northern Renaissance, depicts the solemn moment of the Entombment of Christ. Schongauer was a pioneer in the development of copperplate engraving, and this work demonstrates his technical precision. The composition is tightly organised around the central figure of Christ, whose body is lowered into the stone sarcophagus by his followers. The Virgin Mary, positioned centrally, leans forward to embrace her son, while other figures express their grief through varied postures and facial expressions.
Schongauer uses a system of fine, parallel lines and cross-hatching to create volume and texture. This method allows for a subtle range of light and shadow, giving the figures a sense of weight and presence. The background features a stark, rocky formation and a barren tree, which contrast with the emotional intensity of the foreground scene. The crown of thorns lies discarded in the lower right corner, serving as a reminder of the preceding events.
As a member of the German school, Schongauer influenced many later artists, including Albrecht Dürer. His ability to convey human emotion through precise line work remains a defining characteristic of his output. This print is part of a larger series dedicated to the Passion of Christ, a subject that allowed the artist to explore themes of suffering and devotion. The clarity of the lines and the balanced arrangement of the figures show a sophisticated understanding of spatial depth and narrative focus. This museum-grade print captures the fine detail of the original engraving, preserving the tonal nuances achieved by the artist through his mastery of the burin.
