Description
This woodcut by Albrecht Altdorfer depicts Christ carrying the cross, surrounded by soldiers. The scene is rendered in fine lines, with a focus on detail and texture.
Albrecht Altdorfer (c. 1480-1538) was a German painter, engraver, and architect of the Renaissance period. He is best known for his work in the Danube school, which combined German and Italian styles. Altdorfer is considered one of the founders of landscape art. He worked primarily in Regensburg, Bavaria. His patrons included Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I. He is known for his small-scale woodcuts and etchings, often of religious or mythological subjects. 'Christ Carrying the Cross' depicts the Passion of Christ. A crowd of soldiers surrounds Christ, who is bent under the weight of the cross. The scene is rendered in fine lines, with a focus on detail and texture. The architecture in the background is rendered with the same level of detail as the figures in the foreground. The composition is crowded and dynamic, reflecting the emotional intensity of the scene.

Artist Biography
Albrecht Altdorfer
He was born around 1480, probably in Regensburg, and became a citizen in 1505. He is credited with painting one of the first pure landscapes in oil with no human figures, Landscape with Footbridge (c. 1518 to 1520), a step that no European painter had taken since antiquity. He died in Regensburg in 1538.
