A satirical lithograph from 1832 by Denis-Auguste-Marie Raffet, depicting a political eclipse as a commentary on the French July Monarchy.
Published in the satirical journal La Caricature, this lithograph by Denis-Auguste-Marie Raffet offers a biting commentary on the political climate of 1832 France. Raffet, a draughtsman known for his military subjects and social observations, employs the visual metaphor of a solar eclipse to represent the perceived obscuration of the French tricolour flag by the ruling powers of the July Monarchy.
The composition depicts a group of figures observing the celestial event through telescopes. The central figure, dressed in military attire, gestures towards the sky, where the sun is partially eclipsed by a disc bearing the colours of the French flag. The surrounding figures, seated in various states of agitation or indifference, represent the fractured political landscape of the era. Raffet uses lithography to capture the nuances of expression and posture, moving away from the rigid lines of engraving to achieve a more fluid, sketch-like quality.
This work belongs to a period of intense censorship and political unrest in Paris. La Caricature, edited by Charles Philipon, frequently used such allegorical imagery to bypass strict government oversight. The print functions as a record of the tensions between the republican ideals of the 1830 Revolution and the conservative policies of King Louis-Philippe. By framing the political situation as a natural phenomenon, Raffet invites the viewer to consider the fragility of the new regime. The work remains a primary source for understanding the visual language of nineteenth-century French dissent, demonstrating how artists used satire to engage with the public discourse of their time.
