A detailed 1773 etching and engraving by Domenico Cunego, depicting the biblical scene of the Great Flood after a composition by Nicolas Poussin.
This print by Domenico Cunego, dated 1773, is an etching and engraving based on a composition by Nicolas Poussin. It depicts the biblical narrative of the Great Flood, a subject that allowed artists of the period to explore human emotion, desperation, and the sublime power of nature. The scene is populated by figures seeking refuge on a rocky outcrop as the waters rise around them. The composition is structured to guide the viewer through the various reactions of the survivors, from the protective embrace of parents to the exhaustion of those already overcome by the elements. In the distance, the faint outline of the ark serves as a reminder of the divine promise amidst the catastrophe.
Cunego was a skilled printmaker who worked in Rome, where he reproduced many works by Old Masters. His technique here demonstrates a mastery of tonal variation, using fine cross-hatching to create the dramatic shadows of the storm-darkened sky and the texture of the wet rocks. The inscription at the base, referencing the forty days and forty nights of rain, provides the necessary context for the scene. The print reflects the eighteenth-century interest in classical themes and the technical precision required to translate complex oil paintings into the medium of engraving. The figures are rendered with anatomical accuracy, consistent with the academic standards of the time. This work is a fine example of the reproductive printmaking tradition, which allowed collectors to own copies of major historical compositions. The balanced arrangement of the figures and the clear narrative focus demonstrate the influence of Poussin's original design, which Cunego has carefully preserved through his meticulous line work and shading.
