A traditional Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Sadakage, depicting the courtesan Hinaogi in her elaborate kimono.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Sadakage depicts the courtesan Hinaogi, a figure associated with the Daikokuya establishment. The work belongs to the Ukiyo-e tradition, which focused on the floating world of Edo-period Japan, capturing the fashion, theatre, and personalities of the pleasure districts. Sadakage, a student of Utagawa Kunisada, demonstrates the stylistic conventions of the era through the precise rendering of the subject's elaborate attire and coiffure.
Hinaogi is shown in a seated posture, her body angled to display the complex patterns of her kimono. The garment features a bold, dark-ground floral motif across the shoulders, transitioning into a lower section decorated with mythological or theatrical imagery, including a figure resembling a demon or deity. Her hair is styled with numerous ornamental pins, a hallmark of high-ranking courtesans of the time. The background is simplified, using architectural lines to suggest the interior of the Kadomachi district entrance, which keeps the focus entirely on the subject.
The colour palette relies on muted tones, typical of early nineteenth-century printing techniques, with soft pinks, blues, and blacks providing contrast. The line work is clean and controlled, defining the folds of the fabric and the delicate features of the face. This print functions as a record of the aesthetic standards and social hierarchies within the Yoshiwara district. By documenting specific individuals like Hinaogi, artists such as Sadakage provided a visual catalogue of the celebrities who defined the cultural life of Edo. The print remains a clear example of the technical skill involved in multi-block woodcut production, where each colour required a separate carved block to achieve the final composition.
