A detailed depiction of the biblical conversion of St. Paul, rendered in the ornate International Gothic style by the Italian master Pisanello.
This work by Pisanello, a master of the International Gothic style, depicts the biblical moment of Saul's transformation. The composition is organised within a circular frame, a common format for devotional panels of the period. The artist focuses on the physical reality of the scene, prioritising the heavy, articulated steel armour of the figures and the elaborate trappings of the horses over a realistic sense of space.
Saul is shown fallen from his mount, his body angled to suggest the suddenness of his collapse. Above him, his companions remain mounted, their faces partially obscured by visors. The attention to material detail is characteristic of Pisanello, who was also a celebrated medallist. The textures of the metal, the embroidered fabrics, and the leather tack are rendered with precision. The background features a stylised, hilly terrain that reflects the decorative sensibilities of the early fifteenth century rather than an attempt at naturalistic perspective.
The palette is dominated by muted earth tones, punctuated by the striking red of the headgear and the bright blue of the horse's harness. This use of colour serves to guide the eye across the complex arrangement of figures. Pisanello's approach to the subject is grounded in the courtly aesthetic of the time, where the narrative is presented with a sense of pageantry. The work demonstrates the artist's ability to combine observation of the natural world with the ornamental traditions of his era. It remains a clear example of the transition between medieval artistic conventions and the emerging interests of the early Renaissance in Italy.
