A refined tempera painting by Michelino da Besozzo depicting the betrothal of the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph in the International Gothic style.
This work by Michelino da Besozzo depicts the betrothal of the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph. As a representative of the International Gothic style, the composition prioritises decorative elegance and a courtly atmosphere over strict spatial realism. The figures are arranged within a shallow, architectural space, their forms defined by soft modelling and a refined use of tempera.
The central action involves the exchange of a ring, a moment captured with quiet solemnity. Saint Joseph, depicted as an older man with a grey beard, wears a deep red mantle, while the Virgin is draped in a dark blue cloak. Surrounding them are various figures, including suitors and attendants, whose varied expressions and postures contribute to the narrative density of the scene. The artist employs a palette dominated by muted earth tones, punctuated by the saturated blue and red of the primary figures' garments.
Michelino da Besozzo was a painter and manuscript illuminator active in Milan. His work is known for its fluid lines and attention to detail, traits that are evident in the treatment of the figures' faces and the delicate rendering of the halos. The architectural setting, with its arched forms, provides a structured backdrop that frames the central interaction. This piece reflects the aesthetic preferences of the early fifteenth-century Italian courts, where a blend of naturalistic observation and stylistic refinement was highly valued. The work remains a clear example of the transition between the late medieval tradition and the emerging Renaissance focus on human emotion and narrative clarity.
