A dynamic Mannerist study by Lelio Orsi, depicting the dramatic biblical moment of St. Paul's conversion through fluid ink and wash techniques.
This drawing by Lelio Orsi captures the dramatic biblical narrative of the conversion of Saul on the road to Damascus. Orsi, a master of the Emilian Mannerist tradition, employs a complex, multi-layered composition that balances the celestial and the terrestrial. The upper portion of the sheet is occupied by divine figures emerging from clouds, while the lower section depicts the chaotic reaction of the soldiers and their horses to the sudden, blinding light of the divine encounter.
The artist uses a combination of pen and brown ink with wash to create a sense of atmospheric depth. His line work is fluid and energetic, characteristic of his preparatory studies. The figures exhibit the elongated proportions and dynamic, twisting poses typical of the Mannerist style, which prioritised emotional intensity and artifice over classical restraint. The horses, in particular, are rendered with a sense of agitation that mirrors the spiritual upheaval of the scene.
Orsi was active in Novellara and Reggio Emilia, and his work often reflects the influence of Correggio and Parmigianino. This specific study demonstrates his ability to organise a crowded, active scene within a relatively small format. The use of wash allows for subtle gradations of light and shadow, which help to define the forms against the paper ground. As a preparatory work, it offers a glimpse into the artist's creative process, showing how he constructed the narrative through successive layers of chalk and ink. The composition remains focused on the central moment of transformation, with the surrounding figures serving to amplify the scale of the event. This print reproduces the textures and tonal qualities of the original drawing, preserving the spontaneity of Orsi's hand and the specific character of his ink application.
