A detailed Mannerist drawing by Peter de Witte depicting the biblical Annunciation to the Shepherds, rendered in pen, ink, and wash.
This drawing by Peter de Witte, also known as Pietro Candido, depicts the biblical scene of the Annunciation to the Shepherds. The composition is divided into two distinct registers. In the upper section, a central angel descends from a celestial cloud, surrounded by a multitude of cherubim. The lower section shows a group of shepherds in a rural setting, reacting to the sudden divine appearance with gestures of surprise and awe.
De Witte, a Flemish artist who spent much of his career in Italy and at the court in Munich, demonstrates the stylistic traits of Northern Mannerism. The figures exhibit elongated proportions and dynamic, twisting poses, which are characteristic of the period. The use of pen and brown ink combined with wash allows for a clear distinction between the ethereal light emanating from the heavenly host and the shadowed, earthly realm of the shepherds. The trees and rocky terrain provide a sense of depth, framing the central action while guiding the viewer's eye toward the radiant figure of the angel.
This work reflects the artist's technical proficiency in draughtsmanship. The lines are precise, defining the musculature and clothing of the shepherds, while the wash application creates soft transitions in tone. The arrangement of the figures suggests a carefully planned narrative, balancing the chaotic energy of the shepherds' reaction with the structured, symmetrical placement of the celestial beings above. As a study or preparatory work, it offers insight into the artist's process of constructing complex religious scenes, prioritising dramatic movement and clear storytelling. The monochromatic palette focuses attention on the composition and the interplay of light, which remains a central element in the depiction of this miraculous event.
