A minimalist paper cut-out from the artist's 1947 Jazz series, featuring bold shapes and a saturated colour palette.
The Circus is a plate from the artist's book Jazz, published in 1947. This work represents the culmination of the artist's experimentation with the paper cut-out technique, a method he adopted during his later years when physical health constraints limited his ability to paint at an easel. By using scissors to carve directly into sheets of paper painted with gouache, he achieved a synthesis of drawing and colour. The composition displays a stark, minimalist approach to the subject. A white silhouette of a head, rendered with extreme economy, dominates the frame. The figure appears to be in the act of performance, with three white strips emerging from the mouth, marked by dark, undulating lines. The background consists of a bold magenta field, framed by strips of blue, black, and red. This arrangement creates a sense of flat, graphic tension, typical of the artist's late-period aesthetic. In this series, the artist sought to capture the rhythm and energy of the circus, music, and theatre. Rather than providing a literal depiction of the scene, he focused on the emotional resonance of the performance. The use of high-contrast shapes and a limited, saturated palette allows the viewer to focus on the essential forms. The work reflects a move away from traditional representation towards a language of pure shape and colour. By stripping away unnecessary detail, the artist directs attention to the movement and character of the subject. This piece remains a clear example of his ability to communicate complex ideas through simple, direct visual means, demonstrating his mastery over the relationship between positive and negative space.
