This botanical print originates from Robert John Thornton's ambitious publication, The Temple of Flora, issued between 1799 and 1807. Thornton, a physician and botanist, sought to combine scientific accuracy with the dramatic aesthetic sensibilities of the Romantic period. Unlike traditional botanical plates that isolated specimens against plain backgrounds, this work places the Nymphaea caerulea within a specific geographical context. The composition features the waterlily in the foreground, rendered with precision, while the background depicts an Egyptian scene complete with a mosque and palm trees. This approach reflects the era's fascination with exoticism and the classification of the natural world. The print employs a combination of aquatint and stipple engraving, techniques that allowed for subtle tonal gradations and a soft, painterly quality. The artist, Philip Reinagle, provided the original painting for this plate, which was then translated into print by the engraver Joseph Constantine Stadler. The blue petals of the lily contrast with the deep green of the pads, while the muted tones of the background provide a sense of atmospheric depth.
