A haunting lithograph by Denis-Auguste-Marie Raffet depicting spectral Napoleonic soldiers rising from the earth to the sound of a drum.
Denis-Auguste-Marie Raffet was a master of the lithographic medium, known for his ability to capture the drama and pathos of the Napoleonic era. In this work, titled Le Réveil, he depicts a spectral scene where fallen soldiers rise from the earth to the sound of a drum. The central figure, a drummer in uniform, stands amidst a chaotic assembly of ghosts, his posture conveying a sense of duty that transcends death itself. The surrounding figures emerge from a hazy, atmospheric background, their forms rendered with a combination of sharp detail and soft, ethereal shading characteristic of Raffet's technical skill.
The composition relies on the contrast between the solid, upright drummer and the sprawling, fragmented bodies of the resurrected troops. Raffet uses the lithographic stone to create a range of greys, from the deep shadows of the uniforms to the pale, misty light that envelops the scene. This work belongs to a series of prints that contributed to the Napoleonic legend in France, reflecting the public fascination with the military history of the early nineteenth century. The artist avoids glorifying the violence of war, choosing instead to focus on the haunting, melancholic nature of memory and sacrifice.
As a printmaker, Raffet possessed a keen eye for historical accuracy in costume and equipment, which he balanced with a flair for the dramatic. The scene is not merely a depiction of a battle, but a symbolic representation of the past returning to haunt the present. The print captures the tension between the stillness of the grave and the sudden, jarring movement of the awakening. It remains a fine example of French Romantic printmaking, demonstrating the capacity of the medium to convey complex narratives through light, shadow, and composition.
