A dramatic lithograph by Denis-Auguste-Marie Raffet depicting a battlefield scene where a vivandière calls for aid amidst cavalrymen.
Denis-Auguste-Marie Raffet was a French illustrator and lithographer known for his depictions of Napoleonic military life. This print, titled Secourez la vivandière!, captures a chaotic scene on a battlefield. A vivandière, a woman who provided provisions and medical aid to French soldiers, lies on the ground, calling for assistance. Mounted cavalrymen surround her, their horses rearing in the tumult of combat. The composition conveys the urgency and danger inherent in the Napoleonic campaigns, a subject that occupied much of Raffet's career.
Raffet utilised the lithographic medium to achieve a range of tonal values, from the deep shadows of the smoke-filled sky to the lighter areas on the horses and the fallen figure. His technique allows for a sense of movement and atmosphere, typical of the Romantic interest in the drama of war. The figures are rendered with a focus on the grit and reality of the soldier's experience rather than a sanitised or heroic view. The title, printed below the image, acts as a direct appeal, drawing the viewer into the immediate crisis depicted.
This work reflects the mid-nineteenth-century fascination with the Napoleonic era, which remained a potent subject in French visual culture long after the Emperor's defeat. Raffet's ability to balance historical detail with emotional intensity made his prints popular among those who sought to commemorate the experiences of the Grande Armée. The print demonstrates his technical skill in managing the lithographic stone to create depth and texture, particularly in the rendering of the horses and the swirling, dark clouds that dominate the upper portion of the frame. It is a stark representation of the human cost of conflict, focusing on the vulnerability of those who followed the army into the field.
