A masterful 15th-century illumination by Jean Fouquet, depicting the Ascension of Christ with remarkable spatial depth and saturated colour.
This miniature, attributed to the French master Jean Fouquet, originates from the celebrated Hours of Étienne Chevalier. Created during the mid-fifteenth century, the work demonstrates the technical precision and stylistic innovation that defined Fouquet's career. The composition is divided into two distinct registers: the celestial realm above and the terrestrial gathering below.
In the upper portion, Christ ascends into a pale blue sky, surrounded by a host of angels with deep blue wings. His figure is central, rendered with a sense of weight and presence that departs from the flatter, more decorative styles of earlier Gothic illumination. Below, the Virgin Mary and the Apostles are depicted in a tight, circular arrangement. Their garments are rendered in saturated tones of red, blue, and ochre, with the heavy folds of the fabric providing a sense of volume and physical reality. The figures look upward, their expressions conveying a mixture of awe and devotion.
Fouquet was a pioneer in incorporating Italianate perspective and naturalistic modelling into the French tradition. This work reflects his ability to balance the demands of devotional iconography with a burgeoning interest in human anatomy and spatial depth. The inclusion of Latin text at the base of the frame is characteristic of the period, grounding the spiritual narrative within the formal structure of the prayer book. The use of lapis lazuli for the blue tones and the careful application of gold leaf contribute to the overall luminosity of the piece. As a fine art print, this image captures the meticulous detail of the original vellum, allowing for an appreciation of the artist's brushwork and the sophisticated colour palette that has remained preserved for centuries.
