This woodcut by Albrecht Altdorfer depicts the biblical story of Abraham's sacrifice. The scene is rendered with fine lines and dramatic contrasts, typical of the artist's style.
Albrecht Altdorfer (c. 1480-1538) was a German painter, engraver and architect of the Renaissance. He is known particularly for his innovative depictions of religious and historical subjects set against expressive, atmospheric backgrounds. As a founder of the Danube School, Altdorfer combined German and Italian styles, often incorporating elements of the fantastic. His work is characterised by a detailed attention to nature and a dramatic use of light and shadow. 'Abraham's Sacrifice' depicts the Old Testament story of Abraham, who is commanded by God to sacrifice his son Isaac. Just as Abraham is about to carry out the act, an angel intervenes, stopping him and providing a ram as a substitute sacrifice. In Altdorfer's woodcut, Abraham stands over Isaac, sword in hand, while the angel descends from the heavens. A column of smoke rises from the altar. The scene is set against a detailed background with a crowd of onlookers and a distant town. The composition is rendered with fine lines and a dramatic contrast between light and dark, typical of Altdorfer's style.
