A classical engraving by Jacob Matham depicting the mythological union of Athena and Mercury, rendered with the technical precision of the Northern Mannerist school.
This engraving by Jacob Matham depicts the classical union of Athena and Mercury, a pairing often referred to as Hermathena. In this composition, the two deities are seated amidst swirling clouds, which provide a celestial backdrop for their interaction. Athena, identified by her plumed helmet and the aegis featuring the Gorgon head, holds a long staff. Mercury, recognisable by his winged petasos and the caduceus, sits opposite her. The figures are rendered with the elongated proportions and muscular definition typical of the Northern Mannerist tradition.
Matham, a pupil and stepson of Hendrick Goltzius, demonstrates a mastery of the burin through his use of varied line weights to define form and texture. The drapery is handled with fluid, sweeping strokes, while the musculature of the figures is articulated through precise cross-hatching. The scene is framed by a sense of atmospheric depth, with the clouds serving to isolate the figures from any earthly context. Below the figures, a Latin inscription provides a scholarly gloss on the nature of the two deities, linking Athena to wisdom and Mercury to eloquence. This work reflects the period interest in humanistic allegory, where classical mythology was frequently employed to represent intellectual virtues. The print is a fine example of the technical skill found in the Haarlem school of printmaking during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, where the influence of Italian masters was synthesised with local stylistic preferences for dramatic lighting and anatomical stylisation.
