A detailed copperplate engraving by Johann Theodor de Bry, depicting Cupid in a classical setting with an accompanying Latin inscription.
This engraving by Johann Theodor de Bry depicts a classical scene featuring Cupid, or Amor, positioned beside a tree. The figure of Cupid is shown in profile, actively engaged with the trunk, while his bow and quiver lie discarded on the ground nearby. In the background, a smaller, secondary Cupid figure is visible in flight, and a couple stands in the distance, observing the scene. The composition is typical of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth-century Northern Mannerist tradition, where mythological subjects were often treated with a focus on precise line work and allegorical meaning.
De Bry, a member of a prominent family of engravers and publishers, utilised the burin to create clear, defined contours and subtle cross-hatching to suggest volume in the figures and texture in the bark of the tree. The inclusion of the Latin inscription, OVERSVTE PVER FOECVNDI INSERTOR AMORIS, provides a moralising or thematic context, common in the emblem books and print series of the period. The spatial arrangement creates a sense of depth, moving from the foreground action to the distant figures, reflecting the technical proficiency of the de Bry workshop in Frankfurt. This print serves as an example of the period's interest in classical motifs, adapted for a contemporary audience through the medium of copperplate engraving. The work is characterised by its clean execution and the balanced distribution of elements across the frame, maintaining a focus on the narrative interaction between the central figure and his environment.
