A classic woodblock triptych by Gosōtei Hirosada depicting three renowned Kabuki actors in their historical roles.
This triptych by the Osaka-based artist Gosōtei Hirosada captures a specific moment from the Kabuki theatre, a popular form of performance art in nineteenth-century Japan. The print depicts three actors in their respective roles: Mimasu Daigorō IV as Umako Daijin, Ichikawa Ebizō V as Umaya Daijin, and Jitsukawa Ensaburō as Prince Shōtoku. Hirosada was a prolific designer of actor prints, known as yakusha-e, which served as both promotional material and souvenirs for theatre enthusiasts in the Kamigata region.
The composition is divided into three distinct panels, each focusing on the expressive facial features and elaborate costumes of the performers. The central figure, Ichikawa Ebizō V, displays the dramatic, stylised makeup and intense expression characteristic of the aragoto style of acting. The surrounding figures are rendered with equal attention to the specific iconography of their roles, including the historical garments and accessories that identify these legendary figures from Japanese history. The background features a radiating pattern, a common device in woodblock prints of this period to suggest energy or dramatic tension.
Technically, the work demonstrates the precision of the woodblock printing process. The lines are clean and controlled, defining the contours of the faces and the patterns on the garments. The colour palette is restrained, relying on earthy tones, soft greys, and muted blues, which allows the viewer to focus on the characterisation of the actors. This print provides a window into the aesthetic preferences of the Osaka print market, which often favoured a more realistic approach to actor portraiture compared to the more stylised works produced in Edo. By documenting these performances, Hirosada preserved the visual identity of the Kabuki stage, offering a record of the costumes, makeup, and dramatic presence that defined the era.
