A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Gosōtei Hirosada depicting two Kabuki actors in a dramatic theatrical scene.
This woodblock print by Gosōtei Hirosada captures a dramatic moment from the Kabuki theatre, a popular form of performance art in nineteenth-century Japan. The composition depicts two renowned actors, Ichikawa Ebizō V and Kataoka Gadō, in their respective roles as the outlaw Nippon Daemon and Tokushima Gohei. Hirosada was a prolific artist based in the Kamigata region, which encompassed Osaka and Kyoto. His work is distinct from the Edo school, often focusing on the specific mannerisms and facial expressions of actors performing in local theatres.
The print employs the chūban format, a size commonly used for actor portraits in the Osaka region. The figures are rendered with sharp, precise lines that define their theatrical makeup and elaborate costumes. The actor on the left, Ichikawa Ebizō V, is shown with a focused, intense gaze, while the figure on the right, Kataoka Gadō, holds a sword, adding a sense of tension to the scene. The use of colour is controlled, relying on a balanced palette of deep blues, soft skin tones, and muted greys to direct the viewer's attention to the actors' faces.
Hirosada's ability to capture the individual likeness of performers made his prints highly desirable among theatre enthusiasts of the period. This work functions as a record of a specific performance, preserving the aesthetic choices of the actors and the visual style of the production. The print demonstrates the technical skill involved in the nishiki-e process, where multiple woodblocks were carved and printed to achieve the final image. The composition is flat, typical of the Ukiyo-e tradition, which prioritises graphic clarity and decorative arrangement over three-dimensional space. This piece provides a window into the visual culture of the late Edo period, documenting the intersection of printmaking and the performing arts.
