A 1756 woodblock print by Torii Kiyomitsu I depicting the kabuki actor Segawa Kikunojo II in the role of the dancer Renri.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyomitsu I depicts the kabuki actor Segawa Kikunojo II in the role of the shirabyoshi dancer Renri. The performance took place at the Ichimura Theater in Edo during the eleventh month of 1756. As a member of the Torii school, Kiyomitsu I maintained the family tradition of documenting the kabuki stage, a practice that defined the visual identity of the theatre for generations.
The print is a benizuri-e, a style of early colour printing that utilised a limited palette, typically involving two or three colours applied to the monochrome base. Here, the artist employs soft pinks and muted greens to define the costume, contrasting against the neutral paper tone. The composition focuses on the figure of the actor, who stands in a graceful, slightly turned pose while holding a large, open umbrella. The lines are precise and controlled, characteristic of the Torii style, which prioritised the clear representation of the actor's features and the specific details of their stage attire.
Segawa Kikunojo II was a celebrated onnagata, an actor who specialised in female roles. His posture and the arrangement of his kimono reflect the stylised movements of the dance. The inclusion of calligraphic text, which identifies the actor and the play, integrates the literary and visual elements common in Ukiyo-e works of this period. The print serves as a record of a specific theatrical moment, capturing the aesthetic conventions of mid-eighteenth-century Japanese performance art. The balance between the figure and the surrounding negative space creates a sense of poise, typical of the period before the full development of nishiki-e, or full-colour brocade prints.
