A classic yakusha-e woodblock print by Ippitsusai Bunchō, depicting the kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjūrō in the role of Tenjiku Tokubee.
This woodblock print by Ippitsusai Bunchō depicts the kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjūrō in the role of the legendary adventurer Tenjiku Tokubee. Bunchō was a master of the yakusha-e genre, which focused on portraits of actors from the Edo period theatre. His style is characterised by a slim, elegant figure and a focus on the specific facial features of the performer, rather than an idealised representation.
The actor is shown in a dynamic pose, holding a staff over his shoulder. He wears a patterned kimono with a distinctive grid design on the lower half and a red, net-like pattern on his sleeves and leggings. The composition is clean, with the figure set against a plain background, allowing the viewer to focus on the costume and the actor's expression. The print uses a limited palette, typical of the period, relying on soft oranges, reds, and ink-black lines to define the form.
Tenjiku Tokubee was a popular figure in Japanese folklore, often associated with travel to India and magical abilities. In the context of kabuki, the role allowed for dramatic performance and elaborate costumes. Bunchō captures the intensity of the character through the actor's gaze and posture. This work is an example of the refined aesthetic that defined the mid-eighteenth-century print market in Edo. The artist's signature and seal are visible on the right side of the print, alongside the calligraphic text that identifies the actor and the role. The print demonstrates the technical skill involved in the woodblock process, where each colour required a separate carved block to achieve the final image.
