A classic benizuri-e woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu, capturing the theatrical elegance of the kabuki actor Sanogawa Ichimatsu I.
This woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu depicts the celebrated kabuki actor Sanogawa Ichimatsu I. Masanobu was a significant figure in the development of ukiyo-e, known for his innovations in print technology and composition. This work is a benizuri-e, a style of print that uses a limited palette of colours, typically pink and green, applied to the monochrome base. The technique represents a transitional phase in the history of Japanese printmaking, moving from hand-coloured works toward the full-colour nishiki-e prints that would emerge later in the century.
The composition features the actor in a theatrical pose, accompanied by other figures, beneath a large, open umbrella. The lines are precise and calligraphic, characteristic of the period's focus on elegant, elongated figures. The clothing displays varied patterns, from geometric checks to floral motifs, demonstrating the artist's attention to the fashion of the Edo period. The figures are arranged in a flat, decorative manner, typical of the ukiyo-e aesthetic, which prioritises graphic clarity over three-dimensional space. The soft, muted tones of the print provide a sense of historical authenticity, reflecting the original ink and pigment application methods of the 18th century.
Masanobu was not only an artist but also a publisher, which allowed him to experiment with new formats and printing techniques. His work often captured the glamour of the kabuki theatre and the personalities of its performers. This print serves as a record of the visual culture surrounding the theatre in Edo-period Japan. The focus remains on the stylised representation of the actor, whose fame was tied to his ability to embody specific character types on stage. The print captures a moment of quiet interaction, contrasting with the high energy often associated with kabuki performances.
