This woodblock print by Kondo Kiyoharu depicts the kabuki actor Sanjō Kantarō in the role of an itinerant Buddhist nun. Produced during the early eighteenth century, the work belongs to the urushi-e tradition, a style of hand-coloured print that often utilised lacquer-like pigments to create deep, glossy black tones. The composition is minimalist, focusing entirely on the figure against a plain background, which allows the viewer to observe the specific costume details and the actor's stylised posture.
The figure wears a wide-brimmed hat, typical of travellers in the Edo period, and a dark kimono adorned with subtle fan motifs. The use of colour is restrained, relying on a palette of black, yellow, and muted ochre. This choice directs attention to the graphic quality of the lines and the silhouette of the actor. The print captures the essence of the actor's performance, reflecting the close relationship between the kabuki theatre and the ukiyo-e print market of the time. Such prints were often sold as souvenirs or promotional materials for theatre-goers, documenting the appearance of popular performers in their most celebrated roles.
Kondo Kiyoharu was active in the early stages of the ukiyo-e movement, and his work demonstrates the technical limitations and aesthetic choices of the period. The lines are bold and direct, lacking the complex shading found in later prints. This simplicity is a defining characteristic of early eighteenth-century Japanese printmaking.
