A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Ippitsusai Bunchō, depicting the kabuki actor Nakamura Tomijuro in a female role.
This woodblock print by Ippitsusai Bunchō captures the actor Nakamura Tomijuro in a female role, a common practice in the kabuki theatre of the Edo period. The artist is known for his yakusha-e, or actor prints, which often focused on the specific mannerisms and facial expressions of performers. Bunchō was a contemporary of Katsukawa Shunshō, and together they moved away from the stylised, generic faces of earlier ukiyo-e artists to create more individualised portraits.
The composition features the actor draped in a striking red cape adorned with a circular crest featuring a wheel-like motif. Beneath this, the costume displays a pattern of white blossoms against a muted ground. The figure is positioned against a simple interior backdrop, with a curtain and a sliding door frame providing a sense of space. The lines are precise and controlled, typical of the mid-eighteenth-century print style that prioritised clarity and elegance over excessive ornamentation.
Bunchō’s work is valued for its restraint. He avoids clutter, allowing the viewer to focus on the posture and the costume of the actor. The colour palette is limited, relying on earthy tones and the bold red of the cape to create visual interest. This print is a fine example of the nishiki-e, or brocade print, technique, which allowed for multiple colours to be applied to a single sheet. The print serves as a record of a specific performance, capturing the ephemeral nature of the theatre in a permanent medium. The artist’s signature and seal are visible in the lower left, confirming the provenance of this piece within the broader context of Japanese printmaking history.
