Description

An early eighteenth-century woodblock print by Torii Kiyomasu I, capturing the kabuki actor Nakamura Gentaro in a dynamic female role.

This woodblock print by Torii Kiyomasu I depicts the kabuki actor Nakamura Gentaro in a female role. The artist was a member of the Torii school, a group closely associated with the kabuki theatre in Edo. The work is a sumizuri-e, or ink-printed picture, which relies on bold black lines rather than colour to define the subject.

The actor is shown in motion, captured mid-game with a battledore and shuttlecock. The kimono is decorated with various small scenes and calligraphic elements, a stylistic choice that adds visual texture to the garment. The figure's posture is dynamic, with the head tilted upwards to follow the flight of the shuttlecock. The lines are thick and confident, characteristic of the early Torii style, which aimed to convey the energy and exaggerated gestures of kabuki performers.

Torii Kiyomasu I was instrumental in establishing the visual language of actor prints. These works functioned as promotional material for the theatre, allowing fans to collect images of their favourite performers. The print demonstrates the focus on line weight and composition that defined early eighteenth-century Japanese printmaking. The lack of colour draws attention to the calligraphic quality of the ink work and the deliberate arrangement of the figure within the frame. This piece provides a clear example of the aesthetic priorities of the period, where the focus remained on the theatricality of the subject and the skill of the printmaker in translating the actor's presence onto paper.
