This woodblock print originates from the instructional book titled Odori hitori keiko, or Teach Yourself How to Dance. Produced during the Edo period, such publications functioned as manuals for the urban population, providing guidance on social etiquette, performance, and leisure activities. The composition depicts a lively gathering where individuals engage in musical accompaniment and dance, capturing the social atmosphere of the era.
The artist, Sanshōsai, employs a narrative style common in Japanese illustrated books of the time. The figures are rendered with clear outlines and flat colour fields, typical of the Ukiyo-e tradition. The scene is divided into two distinct sections across the open pages, showing a variety of characters in traditional dress. One side focuses on the preparation and social interaction, while the other shows the performance itself, complete with musicians playing traditional instruments. The use of muted tones, including ochre, soft greens, and faded reds, provides a sense of historical authenticity to the print.
These instructional manuals were popular among the merchant class, who sought to acquire the cultural skills associated with the aristocracy and the theatre.
